The children were playing at a refugee camp in the Bali-Jiir village of the region, situated 472 kilometers (293 miles) north of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Thursday when the explosive device caught their attention.
Three children died on the spot as they banged on the bomb, while two others suffered serious injuries and are being treated in a local medical center.
The incident comes as several Somali children have been recently killed by landmines and other unexploded military ordnance strewn throughout the war-wracked African state.
Last September, at least twelve children were killed and fifteen others wounded after a bomb they found at Suuq Baad market in Mogadishu
