Fighting erupts between Somali forces and Al shabab in Gedo region

KISMAYO, Somalia (Keydmedia) – Bitter fighting between the Islamist fighters of Al shabab aligned with Al Qaeda and TFG troops broke out in the Somalia’s Southwestern region of Gedo region, killing two militants, Keydmedia reports.

Witnesses in Garbaharey, the provincial capital of Gedo told Keydmedia Somali service that the fighting started after Al shabab agents ambushed a convoy of military vihcles carrying Somali troops who were traveling from the town back to their nearby base. Two militants have been killed in the attack.

Galad Mohammed Dahir, a TFG official in the area told Keydmedia Somali service by phone that his forces have attacked on Tuulo Barwaaqo (Barwaqo Township) controlled by Al shabab militants, killing two rebel combatants.

The locals in the areas reported that the two sides exchanged heavy weapon as the fighting continued and the few residents in the area had expressed concern over the continuous clashes there that often causes civilian casualties of deaths and injuries in the region.

There is no yet any comment form Al shabab commanders on the fighting.
