Fresh fighting hits Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia (Keydmedia) - Fresh fighting has hit the Somali capital Mogadishu, with violent clashes erupting between Islamist Al Shabaab rebels-aligned with Al Qaeda and government forces aided by AU peacekeeping soldiers, Keydmedia reports.

Eyewitnesses told Keydmedia English News that heavy fire was exchanged between both sides overnight around 10:00 P.M. (local time) in Hosh and Aslubta neighborhoods in Dharkenlay districts of Banadir region.

The battle broke out when Al shabab agents launched a surprise attack on TFG and AMISOM bases, south ward of Mogadishu, Afgoye corridor and The AU forces are understood to have used tanks and heavy artillery, and the sound of weapons could be heard in major parts of the capital.

Information on casualties was not immediately released.

The latest clashes suggest many Al-Shabab fighters never left the capital, but melted into the community, our correspondent in Mogadishu says.
