Gunmen shoot dead the 4th journalist in Galka’yo town

GALKA’YO, Somalia (Keydmedia) - Unidentified gunmen shot dead a Somalia radio journalist in Galka’yo town of the horn of Africa war-torn country, an incident that markes the 4th journalist to be killed this year alone, witnesses said on Monday.

Eyewitnesses and colleagues told Keydmedia English News via phone that 24-year-old Ali Ahmed Abdi was shot in the head by two masked men armed with pistols as he walked home on Sunday evening in the northern part of Galka’yo town of central Somalia.

Mr.Abdi has previously worked for a local independent Radio station in Galka’yo before joining a Somali news website. Attacks on journalists are common in Somalia.

"This is absolutely shocking and the journalists in Somalia are in a state of fear" A colleague of Ali Ahmed Abdi said. "We are extremely worried about our safety."

It is not yet clear the reason behind the murder of the journalist, but locals expressed shock and fear the alarming increase of insecurity in the town.
