India airlifts Made-in-India Covid-19 vaccines to Somalia

MOGADISHU - India is supplying Somalia with homegrown government-backed Covid-19 vaccine in its 'Vaccine Maitri initiative' to assist countries in their fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The information about the consignment was shared by the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar through his Twitter account. He tweeted, "Reaching across the Indian Ocean. Made in India vaccines arriving in Somalia."

Under the campaign 'Vaccine Maitri initiative', India has been providing coronavirus vaccines to its neighbouring countries.

Twenty-five nations across the world have already received Made-in India vaccines and forty-nine more countries will be supplied in the coming days, according to India's state media. 

According to BBC, India's Covaxin, the homegrown government-backed vaccine, has an efficacy rate of 81%, preliminary data from its phase 3 trial shows.

India's regulators gave the vaccine an emergency approval in January while the third phase of the trial was still under way, sparking scepticism and questions from experts.
