Briefing the General Assembly, Mr Ban appealed to UN member states to prepare to help supplies reach the mission, which is guarding a hotel serving as headquarters to Alassane Ouattara, who the UN said beat Mr Gbagbo in a 28 November election.

Meanwhile, the World Bank has frozen financing for the Ivory Coast as the international community puts pressure on Mr Gbagbo to step down as president.
