Mogadishu mortar attack kills 3 family members

MOGADISHU, Somalia - At least three people belonging to the same family were killed and 15 others wounded when mortar shells landed on residential areas in Mogadishu, the Somali capital.

The pre-dawn mortar shells struck Bondhere, Hamarweyne, and Shangani districts. The dead were a mother and her two children and all of the victims belonged to the same family.

The attack sent a wave of shock among the residents as they woke up in their villages rained down by mortar bombardment that was coming from within the capital.

Despite being driven out of the city and losing large swathes of territory to Somali and AU troops since 2011, the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab continues to strike in the capital and countryside.

Al-Shabaab has not claimed the overnight shelling in Mogadishu, but the group regularly carries out similar bombings and mortar strikes.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh last month pledged a new war against Al-Shabaab following the Hayat hotel siege which left at least 21 people dead and 117 others wounded.
