MOGADISHU, Somalia - The President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia in the coming days after receiving an invitation from King Salman, sources said.

The president will ask the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for humanitarian aid to save the lives of nearly 8 million people, half of the country's population who are on the brink of famine in Somalia.

Somalia has been hit by a severe drought which the UN warned could turn into famine by the end of 2022 as a result of four-year failed rainy seasons, climate change, and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Keydmedia Online learned that the president appealed to the wealthy Arab countries to help Somalia before the situation gets out of control and to avoid the declaration of famine by the UN.

Mohamud previously visited UAE, Turkey, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya, and Egypt to strengthen relations with the world as his predecessor Farmajo failed foreign policy during his presidency.
