Somalia deploys troops to Ethiopia border

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A large number of military troops were deployed in the Elbarde district of the Bakool region today by planes from Baidoa city, the capital of the Bay region.

The soldiers are intended to take part in the operations against the Al-Shabaab in the villages under the Eelbarde district which is located on the Somalia-Ethiopia border.

Last July, Ethiopia's Somali region said it will create buffer security zone in Somalia to avert the Al-Shabaab threat after two deadly cross-border attacks through Bakool province.

Somali forces are fighting against Al-Shabaab on different fronts in Hiran, Galgadud and Middle Shabelle in the south and central with president Hassan Sheikh vowing to defeat the group next year.

It's the biggest offensive since the new administration was installed in May this year. The war gained momentum as the US military is playing role in the efforts to counter Al-Shabaab from air and land.

Dozens of key villages were liberated in central regions by the Somali army with the support of pro-government militia. The bloody battle launched last month inflicted losses on both sides on the frontlines.

Al-Shabaab despite defeats, carried out several bomb attacks in the country, including Kismayo, Bulo-Burde, Beledweyne and Jalalaqsi, where it killed dozens of people, including officials.
