Somalia PM begins efforts to end deadlock over election process

MOGADISHU, Somalia - As his mandate draws to a close and his government has failed to hold timely and inclusive elections last year, Somali PM Mohamed Hussein Roble started efforts to end political tiff.

In the past 24 hours, Roble held talks with two candidates at his office, including Wadajir party leader, Abdirahman Abdishakur, who has been a fierce critic of Farmajo’s administration in the past four years.

In a statement, the PM announced that he discussed with the opposition presidential aspirants the need to reach a consensus on the deepening dispute over the electoral process and iron out outstanding issues.

“We discussed a wide range of issues including peaceful and timely elections. I reiterate my willingness to meet all political leaders and different sections of the society to listen to their views and concerns,” he added.

The former ILO employee who took office as 20th Somali PM in September 2020 made a number of promises to the Somali people, including holding timely, inclusive elections within a four-month term.

Now, it seems that the Prime Minister is following the footsteps of Farmajo’s failure of leadership.

During the past 4 years under Farmajo’s rule, Somalia has faced perhaps many more challenges than it did in its history, creating divisions, political crises, invading peaceful regional states to consolidate power, and stealing the public funds.

Analysts say Somalia needs is a reformer who can redirect its politics to address the protracted political rifts and issues related to security, economic growth, and social cohesion, and good governance.
