Somalia’s president pays surprising visit to Gedo province

GARBAHAREY (KON) - Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the president of Somalia's fragile government has on Thursday paid an unannounced visit to the southwestern province of Gedo, KON reports.

The Somali president, along with a delegation of government ministers, MPs and  officials of the Turkish Red Crescent and other local representatives visited the regional capital of Garbaharey, travelling from Mogadishu by a UN helicopter on Thursday.

The local reports said that Somali president and his delegates were warmly welcomed at the airport by senior officials from Gedo region, SNA officials and civil society.

Addressing hundreds of Garbaharey  residents at the city main HQ, Mohamud said that the effects of drought in the region is immense  and he pledged that his government will respond to the devastating drought and famine.

Meanwhile, Somali president has held meeting with local elders and army commanders in the town and both discussed the ongoing war on Al shabab, security and the recent territorial gains made by the country
