TFG, AMISOM Battle Al-Shabaab in northern Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia (Keydmedia) – Al-Shabaab fighters armed with rocket propelled grenades RPGs and machine guns ambushed overnight at the TFG and African Union peacekeeping forces AMISOM bases in parts of northern Somalia, capital, Mogadishu, military officials said.

Most of the fighting took place at Jamhuriyah and Maslaha villages in Mogadishu’s Karan and Huriwa districts, two strategic positions in north of the capital where recently seized by TFG and AU troops from the rebel insurgents.

Local residents told Keydmedia English News by phone that they could hear the heavy gunfire and artillery, which both side using during three-hours of fighting. The TFG and AMISOM forces say they fought back and pushed the attacking rebels from the areas.

"I saw many war vehicles and heavy machine guns belonging to Al-Shabaab insurgents pouring into the battlefields in Karan district for reinforcements" another resident told Keydmedia English News.

TFG military officials claimed major victory over the battle in Mogadishu, saying they inflicted heavy loss upon Al-shabab fighters. It could not be immediately verify the exact casualties of the attack so far. Mortars hit villages beyond war zones, but no casualties reported.
