UN ‘disappointed’ by Somali parliament extension

Nairobi (keydmedia) The UN special envoy to Somalia Augustine Mahiga said Friday he was disappointed by the decision of country's transitional parliament to extend its own mandate by three years.

This is a disappointing decision taken in haste without the required level of discussion and consultation on how to end the transition and on the next political dispensation after 20 August 2011," Mahiga said in a statement.

On Thursday, 421 lawmakers of the 436 present in parliament endorsed the extension. The mandate of the 550-strong body had been due to expire alongside that of the transitional government (TFG) in August of this year.
