US: Farmajo’s term extension is a breach of democratic norms

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The United States has condemned the Somali parliament’s unlawful decision on Monday to extend President Farmajo’s term for two years.

US Senator Bob Menendez who is the chairmanship of the powerful American Senate Foreign Relations Committee ha described the move as a “breach of democratic norms” and risks destabilizing Somalia.

Menendez called for a timely election in the country, which is a critical pillar of a healthy democracy in the war-torn Horn of Africa country which is facing numerous challenges, including the Al-Shabaab threat.

Continuing, he urged the political stakeholders in Somalia to immediately reach consensus on the contentious electoral issues, warning against any attempt to undermine the dialogue to end the crisis.

“Attempts to undermine dialogue on a path to credible polls MUST stop,” added Menendez.

Since Farmajo's mandate expired last February, the US, a key partner in the fight against Al-Shabaab has been putting pressure on Somali leaders to find a comprehensive solution to the deepened electoral stalemate and quickly reach a deal that leads to free and fair elections.
