Farmajo has been backing Abdiaziz Lafta-Garen who served as public works minister in his government which committed the massacre of 11 protesters in Baidoa during a pro-Robow demonstration in Dec 2018.

Baidoa is one of the two areas in Southwest state scheduled for the upcoming parliamentary elections, and security operations have been underway in recent days to ensure peace.

The IED blast occurred in the busy market in the town of Baidoa in the Bay region, about 250 km to the northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu.
