MOGADISHU, Somalia – A gunman from Al-Shabaab killed three Kenyan soldiers inside a military camp in southern Somalia, a rare attack against the AU troops.

A Kenyan military officer who declined to be named confirmed that the attacker disguised as a soldier to gain access to the base in Sarira within the Lower Juba region.

Five more soldiers have been wounded in the shooting and were airlifted to Nairobi for treatment. The attacker was shot dead by the Kenyan troops during the gunfight.

Monday’s KDF base attack was the second within two consecutive days by Al-Shabaab in Jubaland state who is located near Somalia’s porous border with Kenya.

On Sunday, Al-Shabaab fighters attacked a Kenyan police station in Mandera city in the northeastern region. The assault was repulsed, according to the security officials.

Al-Shabaab poses a greater threat to the security of Kenya and Kenya as well as Ethiopia, where it staged attacks that killed hundreds of people in the past 10 years.

Kenya has suffered deadly attacks, mainly struck Westgate mall, Garissa University and DusitD hotel in the group described revenge for KDF’s presence in Somalia.
