BOSSASO, Somalia - Al-Shabaab militants have launched a mortar attack on a Puntland military base in the Af-Urur located on the outskirts of Bossaso, the regional capital of Bari.
Local residents said they heard artillery shells hitting the base camp and its environs early in the morning before armed militants engaged in a fierce gunfight with the regional troops.

Al-Shabaab has several times carried out artillery and direct attacks on Puntland military bases in Af-Urur in response to Puntland forces operations against its hideouts in Bari.
In 2017, at least 48 Puntland soldiers died in a bomb and gun attack on the Af-Urur outpost by Al-Shabaab, the deadliest terrorist raid on the troops of the northeastern state army.
