At least one dead as a blast hits Somali port city

MARKA, Somalia - At least one person was reportedly killed after an explosion rocked the port city of Marka, the regional capital of Lower Shabelle on Wednesday, witnesses said.

The landmine explosion, which occurred at a garage near the city's police station, shattered windows of residential and commercial structures located distances from the blast site.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack which comes amid fears that Al-Shabaab could retake the city from the Somali and African Union troops' control.

The police cordoned off the scene following the blast and carried out an operation to clear the garage from other suspected explosive devices, according to the local residents.

The coastal town has been calm in the past few months, thanks to enhanced routine patrol by the allied troops who set up checkpoints at the entrance roads to avert terror attacks.
