Bihi’s term extension sparks uncertainty in Somaliland

HARGEISA, Somalia – The swift decision by Guurti, the house of elders in Somaliland to extend the presidential term of the incumbent Muse Bihi Abdi has plunged the breakaway region into uncertainty.

Speaking to the reporters in Hargeisa city, north of Somalia on Sunday, Waddani party candidate Abdirahman Irro described the move to allow Bihi to stay in office beyond his mandate as unconstitutional.

Waddani party firmly considers the decision illegal and will never accept it. The Guurti chamber will shoulder any problem arising from the two-year term extension of the outgoing president,” added Irro.

Also, UCID, the second opposition party has expressed its opposition to the extension, and its leader Faisal Ali Warabe called on the public to come out and voice their rejection of the Guurti decision.

Somaliland seems sliding into a conflict as the main opposition parties could stage violent protests in the coming days with the international community remaining silent on the escalating political tension.

Somaliland’s sitting leader is a former Somali air force colonel who became the president of the region in late 2017 and now his mandate is expiring next month. He is using any means to remain in power.

The region claimed unilateral independence in May 1991 but until now it didn’t get any international recognition as every country is dealing with it just like a part of the greater Somalia.
