Deni in trouble as he fails to pay Puntland employees for months

GAROWE, Somalia – The employees working for Puntland state say they have not received any salary or other rights for three months that could break out a strike.

Some of the civil servants who spoke to KON on condition of anonymity said that Puntland leader Said Abdullahi Deni failed to pay them after failing in May 15 vote.

It’s believed that Deni used millions of the public funds on his election campaign for the president of Somalia which he greatly lost to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Puntland’s ministry of finance did not respond to KON requests for comments on the matter. However, this comes as the Deni administration is under upward pressure.

This could also spark a mutiny by the security forces as happened in the past if the current administration doesn’t quickly solve the lack of payment for the servants.

Puntland is the oldest Federal-State located in northeastern Somalia with a population of around 4 million people. Deni was elected as president of Puntland in early 2019.
