Education minister: No fees for issuing high school certificates

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Minister of Education Farah Sheikh Abdukadir announced good news for parents on Wednesday which is the suspension of the fees charged to students seeking High School Certificates from this year.

The ministry has stopped taking money from secondary school graduates who apply for the certificate. But there are fees charged by the Ministry of Finance for the service whis is $5," said the minister.

Since the certificate and the exam are carried out by the Ministry of Education, from today the Ministry of Education will not charge any fees for the Certificate of High School students.

On the other hand, the Minister has called on the parents of students applying for high school diplomas not to pay any money when their children finish class and enter the unified national exam.

The decision comes at a time when complaints were submitted by the parents of the students who were fed up with the double cost of applying for the High School Diploma both at the ministry and in private educational organizations.

More than threedecades of conflict have nearly destroyed Somalia's educational system, which is characterized by poor quality, insufficient numbers of qualified teachers, and inadequate resources.
