Ex-PM urges Govt to break silence on Ahmed Madobe’s extension

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The former Prime Minister of Somalia, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke has warned of chaos and political turmoil in the country over the extension of the regional leaders.

The two-time PM said the illegal term extension is against "democracy and stability", calling the government of Somalia to act quickly and tell the heads of the Federal States to hold timely elections.

The Federal Government should prevent the leaders of the regional states from extending their terms. It's illegal to move which may lead to violence, conflict, and political discord," said Sharmarke.

The former Prime Minister of Somalia, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, called on the Federal Government to break the silence and declare its stance on the term extension of the heads of the states.

The ex-PM's remarks come days after the Parliament of Jubaland has extended a period of one year to the long-sitting leader Ahmed Madobe, who is a key Kenya ally in Somalia.

The extension was condemned by MPs in the Federal parliament and other people from the constituency of Jubaland, who urged Villa Somalia to stop Madobe from staying the office for life.

Abdulaziz Lafta-Garen, who is at loggerheads with president Hassan Sheikh has also extended his term by one more year and other counterparts are likely to follow in his footsteps.
