Fahad Yasin Faces Political Uncertainty in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Fahad Yasin, former Somalia's Intelligence director is currently facing uncertainty over his political future after being barred from joining the upcoming Parliament.

The election body FEIT has on Monday announced it annulled the results of the hop086 seat vote won by Fahad a day earlier over irregularities and violation of the electoral procedure.

Fahad is accused of killing Ikran Tahlil, a cyber-security officer who went missing early last year and was later pronounced dead by NISA last year and blamed Al-Shabaab for the murder.

The group distanced itself from the NISA claims and termed the accusation as a "scapegoat". This led to the dismissal of Yasin by the PM last year and was subjected to an investigation.

The probe didn't yield any fruit after the inquiry commission made up of military court judges met intimidation and threats from Farmajo's team that controls NISA and the armed forces.

Tahlil worked under Yasin and his deputy Abdullahi Kulane since 2017. She has had sensitive information about thousands of youths secretly sent to Eritrea for training 2019-2020.

PM Roble has earlier ordered the suspension of the hop086 seat, but the Hirshabelle Electoral Commission SEIT, which disobeyed the order, held the election on Sunday in Beledweyne.

As a result, FEIT quickly declared the election result null and void. The move, per Keydmedia English source, irked Fahad and was exerting pressure on FEIT to rescind the decision.

Yasin, who is a powerful figure in Farmajo's term-ended regime is eying the house's deputy speaker post after barring the incumbent Abdiweli Mudey to run for reelection this month.
