Lifting arms embargo on Somalia key to war on Al-Shabaab, president tells UN chief

Algiers - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres on the sidelines of the Arab League Summit in Algeria.

According to Villa Somalia's statement, Mohamud shared with the UN chief the progress made by the Somali forces with the help of the locals in the ongoing military operations against Al-Shabaab.

The president noted that the arms embargo being lifted from Somalia will greatly help in the fight against terrorism in Somalia, both in the region and the world at large.

He asked the United Nations to increase the humanitarian and technical support to Somalia to ensure the stability of the country and take full charge of the security responsibility from the AU troops.

For his part, António Guterres praised how the Federal Government and the member states are united in the security of the country and the completion of the constitution after reaching a deal.

The meeting came hours after the United Nations security council extended the mandate of the UN mission in Mogadishu [UNSOM] to continue the support for the country and the Somali people.

UNSOM was created in 2013, a year after the country moved out of the transitional period. It helps Somalia in its security, state-building, humanitarian and political affairs.
