Rape cases have been on the rise in central Somalia for the past three years as many young girls perish in sexual assaults.
DHUSAMAREB, Somalia - A regional court in central Somalia has slapped a man with a prison sentence and fines after being convicted of rape of a child, prosecutors said on Wednesday.
Mohamed Abdi Dhore will serve six years in prison for kidnapping and raping a six-year-old Farhiya Ali Mohamed on August 19th and seriously injuring her in Godinlabe village.
Abdihakin Mohamed, deputy prosecutor of the Galgadud Regional Court under Galmudug, said the rapist was found guilty after evidence was presented during the court hearing.
The defendant will also pay a criminal fine of two camels costing at least $2,000-3,000.
The sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl is part of growing crimes against women and young girls in Somalia in recent years with most of the rapists go unpunished.
