Puntland troops thwart terrorist attack on military bases

BOSSASO, Somalia – Puntland troops on Monday engaged in combat with Al-Shabaab fighters in Galgala mountains in Somalia’s northeastern Bari region, multiple sources reported.

The militants encountered resistance as they have tried to storm Puntland Defense Forces bases in the contested area which close to the Gulf of Aden port city of Bossaso.

Puntland forces have seized Al-Shabaab’s supplies, donkeys, and camels as the extremists fled of the scene to avoid a big blow from the advancing regional soldiers. This operation took place in Oobijaale.

Both sides suffered casualties during the clashes, but the number of fatalities or injuries still remained sketchy as the area is remote and inaccessible.

The Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab has launched series of attacks on military bases and government targets in the northeast for the past years, leaving scores of troops dead.

After losing ground to Somali and AU troops, Al-Shabaab shifted its guerrilla war to hit-and-run attacks and suicide bombings in the country, mainly in Mogadishu, which houses the government and its allies.
