Somali cabinet sacks head of immigration department

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The longest-serving immigration director Mohamed Aden Kofi has been relieved of his duties on Sunday, ending a six-yea-rule of a lucrative office in Somalia.

During an emergency session on Sunday, the cabinet unanimously voted a proposal by the new security minister Abdullahi Mohamed Nur to sack Kofi as Somalia is in election turmoil.

The office of the PM announced that Abdikadir Elmi Ali [Abdul] was appointed as the new Somali immigration director, succeeding Kofi who is a former Al-Shabaab commander.

Abdul is a close friend of Prime Minister Roble and was serving as his election adviser in recent times. The decree relieving Kofi didn’t however make mention of why he was replaced.

Kofi has been under intense public criticism over the way he ran one of the most important government departments, issuing passports for his ex-Al-Shabaab bosses to travel abroad.

The council of the ministers has also approved the appointment of Eng. Abdikadir Adan Mohamud becomes the new Director of the Petroleum Authority that is marred by oil fraud.
