WURZBURG, Germany – Police in the southern German city of Wurzburg arrested a Somali man after killing three people and wounding five others in a knife attack on Friday.

It’s unclear the motive, but a video widely circulated on social media showed the 24-year-old suspect holding a knife being confronted by witnesses armed with cafe chairs, sticks, and umbrellas to stop him.

The incident happened on Barbarossa Square in the center of the city, where the attacker was shot and wounded in the thigh by the police before being detained, according to the local media.

Würzburg city police spokeswoman Kerstin Kunick told reporters that the Somali national had arrived in Germany in 2015 and documented as a refugee after fleeing from conflict in his country, Somalia.

The town which is located between Frankfurt and Munich hosts a large number of Somali refugees. The suspect was in psychiatric treatment before the attack and was known to police in Germany for years.

Since 2020, there has been a surge in rapes and robberies by Somali refugees in Germany who are said to be drug-addicted, and some with mental illness.
