MOGADISHU, Somalia – The lawmakers of both the Upper and Lower Houses of the Somali parliament unanimously voted on Wednesday to pass the 2023 national budget after days of intense debate and weeks of discussions by the joint Finance committee.
During a joint session of the bicameral legislature, 172 out of 173 MPs present voted in support of the $973,985,805 budget with an increase of $36.3 million compared to this year’s budget 2022 [$ 918.7].
No legislator abstained, and one MP objected, according to the speaker of the Lower House Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur Madobe who chaired the sitting.

Speaking at the session, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Elmi Mohamud Nur, thanked the parliament for approving the budget, which comes amidst a critical the country is at war with Al-Shabaab militants.
