Somali Parliament Approves Hamza’s appointment as the Prime Minister

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali lawmakers on Saturday morning approved President the nomination of Hamza Abdi Barre as the Horn of Africa country’s new prime minister in a landslide vote.

Barre takes the oath of office after 220 MPs support his appointment by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in mid this month following 30 days of the process to pick the best candidate to lead the executive branch.

“All MPs attended today’s sitting (220) endorsed Hamza’s nomination as PM of Somalia with no rejection, and abstention,” announced Sheikh Aden Madobe, the speaker of the Lower House chamber.

Barre was named on the 15th of this month, replacing Mohamed Hussein Roble, who served as PM for two years after his predecessor Hassan Ali Khaire was ousted in July 2020 in a vote of no-confidence.

The new prime minister has promised that he would build an effective government and address the key issues facing the Horn of Africa nation, including drought, lack of security, and talks with Somaliland.

Hamza has been an active member of the president’s UPD political party and worked as head of the electoral commission in Jubaland, his constituency led by Ahmed Madobe, who hails from his Ogaden clan.

Barre was a member of Somalia's 11th Federal Parliament. He was elected to HOP203 in Kismayo city, Jubaland state late December 2021. He lost this seat after being appointed to PM.
