Somali parliament begins debate on elections

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The lawmakers of the Somali parliament's Lower House Chamber gathered at Villa Hargeisa to discuss a motion on the national elections amid brewing political tension in the country.

This meeting kicked off hours after Mogadishu police Chief Sadaq John halted the session amid reports of extension term for the previous mandate of president Farmajo.

The police boss has been fired for his action by the Somali Police Commissioner Gen Abdi Hassan Hijar acting on orders from the outgoing president.

The AMISOM troops maintain the presence taking the security control of the House checking everyone making his way into the session.

The civil servants of the Parliament Building confirmed that no reschedule was made for today’s session with some lawmakers reported to have staged already although certain lawmakers were previously banned from attending the session.
