Somali PM arrives in Egypt for talks with Al-Sisi

CAIRO, Egypt – A high-level Somali delegation led by PM Mohamed Hussein Roble arrived in Cairo on Monday for an official two-day visit to Egypt.

Roble was accorded a warm welcome at the airport his counterpart Mostafa Madbouly and escorted to the presidential palace, where both Prime Ministers held bilateral talks.

Somali PM’s trip came following an invitation from Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi whose relations with Farmajo strained over Somalia’s stance to side with Ethiopia against Egypt in the Nile dam dispute.

It’s not yet clear the reason behind Al-Sisi’s move to invite Somali PM to Cairo but comes days after Roble returned from Kenya, where he restored relations after meeting Uhuru.

Somalia and Egypt share historical ties and both countries are members of the Arab League. Cairo has been backing Mogadishu for years in the humanitarian and education fields.

The caretaker Somali PM paid five overseas trips to Saudi Arabia, UK, Djibouti, Kenya, and Egypt since taking office last year, replacing Khaire who lost parliament's confidence vote.
