Somali PM warns of sanctions against any firm dealing with Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, said that the country is at war with Al-Shabaab, and is doing everything to remove the militants from all regions.

Speaking in an interview with Al-Arabiya TV in Addis Ababa said that his government will impose sanctions on anyone who cooperates with Al-Shabaab or pay tax to the group.

He added that the government has achieved great success in the ongoing multi-front offensive in the central regions with the help of the local people who organized themselves to fight Al-Shabaab.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that the Somali people and their government will succeed in the operations against Al-Shabaab and take over full control of the country.

This comes after the Ministry of Commerce warned businessmen and companies against having contact with Al-Shabaab, and give the group money that could be used for attacks.

The ministry stated that it will revoke the license of any firm or trader found cooperating with Al-Shabaab and ban them from doing business in the country. It is a financial war on Al-Shabaab.

Somali president Hassan Sheikh said the government will close all financial resources of Al-Shabaab to deny the group access to pay for weapons and fund its terror attacks in the country.

Since last month, over 40 villages were recaptured from Al-Shabaab, and hundreds of militants killed in the Hiran and Galgadud regions, where the biggest campaign against the group is underway.
