Somali police in Mogadishu to curb rising crime cases

MOGADISHU, Somalia – As cases of robbery increase in various parts of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, police announced on Tuesday a huge operation to curb the crime.

Speaking to the reporters, police spokesman major Abdifitah Aden Hassan said they will begin security measures to deal with the rampant robbery against the residents.

“From tonight [Tuesday], police will start an operation across Mogadishu to bring an end to the armed robbery by organized youths,” said Aden during a press conference.

The police spokesman sent a warning to the parents of the teenage boys armed with machetes, pistols, and guns and, who are robbing mobile phones from the public.

“Those arrested in the police operation in the city will face severe punishment and the parents will not be allowed to release them from jails on bail,” he added.

The city has witnessed unprecedented robbery by gangs and drunken men in military uniform for the past months due to lax security with a lack of patrol by the police.

The security in Mogadishu has deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks, and gangs in Tuk-Tuk have been roaming in all districts, breaking into houses, shops, and public places.
