Somali president heads to Puntland region amid political rift

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The newly-elected Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is heading to Puntland in the northeast of the country in the coming days, according to reliable sources.

Mohamud's trip came after Puntland rejected a request by PM Hamza Abdi Barre to visit Garowe last week, a move that shows a new political rift following Deni's defeat in the May election.

Villa Somalia requested again the president's visit to Puntland which was accepted by the state leader Said Abdullahi Deni, who is facing an internal political and security crisis for months.

An advance delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Abshir Omar Huruuse, is also heading to Garowe today to pave the way for the president to arrive in the city.

Mohamud is set to improve the cooperation between Puntland and his government which has been deteriorating in recent times after Deni failed to be appointed as prime minister.

It will the 3rd domestic trip by the president to a Federal State in Somalia after previously visiting Southwest and Galmudug days after taking over the office from Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
