MOGADISHU, Somalia – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to make a state visit to Uganda on August 9 as part of his Horn of Africa regional tour to repair relations in all fields.

The president will travel to Kampala at the invitation of his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni to co-chair a joint Uganda-Somalia investment and business summit to be convened on August 9 and 10.

Mohamud and Museveni will discuss bilateral relations and regional opportunities as well as challenges, which necessitate close coordination between Somalia and Uganda, according to Keydmedia Online sources.

The two countries had long-standing ties and cooperation that covers several areas of mutual interest. Uganda is of the East African nations that contributed military and police troops to the AU mission in Somalia.

Uganda hosts thousands of Somali people, some have made multi-million investments in the country and many students enrolled at its universities while others are refugees who fled from the conflict at home.

Also, Uganda was the first to deploy troops under AMISOM [currently ATMIS] into Somalia in March 2007. It has over 6,000 soldiers protecting the presidential palace, airport, and seaport in Mogadishu.

The other troop-contributing countries are - Burundi, Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia.

President Hassan Sheikh who was re-elected the second time to lead the nation on May 15 of this year paid visits to UAE, Turkey, Eritrea, Kenya, Djibouti, Tanzania, and Egypt. Uganda will be his 8th country.

Mohamud is seeking Somalia's peace with itself and the world, a slogan he campaigned during the electioneering period. He wants closer cooperation on security, investment, trade, and regional issues.
