Somali president meets with Ireland’s defense minister

SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Irish defense Minister Simon Coveney in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on Wednesday, his office said.

Mohamud and Coveney discussed ways to strengthen the relations between Somalia and Ireland.

The Somali president briefed the Irish defense on the ongoing military offensive in his country aimed at flushing Al-Shabaab out of the remaining areas and the latest gains made by the troops.

 For his part, Coveney said that his country stands by the Somali people, and will take the crisis in the European Union to get full support, mainly humanitarian assistance to millions hit by the drought.

Ireland is credited for being at forefront of the countries that gave a helping hand to Somalia following the break out of the civil war in 1991, according to a statement issued by Villa Somalia.

President Hassan Sheikh who participated in the COP-27 World Climate Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh returned to Mogadishu on Wednesday afternoon amid tight security measures in the capital.

The city was hit by deadly explosions recently, including an attack that happened at the busy Zoobe intersection which killed at least 121 civilians dead and wounded more than 300 others on Oct 29.
