MOGADISHU, Somalia - President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday received the credentials of a new United Arab Emirates [UAE] ambassador to Somalia at the state house, Villa Somalia in Mogadishu.

The president welcomed Ahmad Juma Al Rumaithi to the country and wished him success in his mission to boost cooperation and friendship relations between the two Arab league member countries.

HE President Hassan Sheikh received credentials from the incoming United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador to Somalia, Ahmad Juma Al Rumaithi, at Villa Somalia today. The President wished the new Ambassador success in further advancing bilateral brotherly relations between the two countries," said Villa Somalia.

During the meeting, the ambassador conveyed greetings and a message from Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE President and promised to work on the development of the diplomatic ties.

Ahmad Juma Al Rumaithi was appointed in September 2022 to replace the wealthy Gulf nation's top representative in Somalia Mohamed Ahmed Al-Othman, who has been in office since 2012.

President Hassan Sheikh has emphasized the importance of improving diplomatic, political, economic, social, and commercial relations with the UAE, based on mutual benefits, according to a statement.

Following the election of Somali President Hassan Sheikh in May, Abu Dhabi and Mogadishu agreed to restore diplomatic relations after four years of hiatus due to Farmajo’s allegiance to Qatar.

After Somalia released $9.6 million UAE money seized in Mogadishu airport in April 2018 by NISA under Fahad Yasin's leadership, the ties improved and both countries began to cooperate.

Shortly after his election victory, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud paid his maiden foreign visit to UAE in June and held a meeting with Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.
