Somali president to meet with Federal States’ leaders after oil deal

MOGADISHU, Somalia - President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is scheduled to open a meeting in Mogadishu in the coming days between his government and the Federal States, which coincides with a military operation in the country, Keydmedia Online has learned.

Villa Somalia has not yet confirmed the conference, however, sources told KON that leaders of the five Federal States will attend the talks in person as key issues, including the oil deals will dominate the agenda.

This will be the second meeting between the President and the regional leaders since he assumed office in May this year. The government of Somalia is trying to liberate and stabilize the country, a key pillar of Mohamud's campaign promises.

The president has last week signed a multi-million dollar petroleum exploration agreement for seven offshore blocks with United States-based Coastline Exploration, which paid a $7 million signature bonus through the central bank of Somalia.

The upcoming talks will also focus on resource-sharing and the fight against Al-Shabaab militants as the army makes gains in the central regions, mainly Hiran, where dozens of villages were liberated since last month.

On the other hand, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is planning to impose martial law in the country, (emergency situation), arguing that the war against al-Shabaab cannot be completed unless the situation is changed.
