Somali soldier faces firing squad over minister’s murder

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia's military court executed Ahmed Abdullahi Abdi, who in May 2017 killed the Minister of Public Works Abbas Abdullahi Sheikh Siraji outside the presidential palace.

The late Abbas died on the 3rd of May 2017 when he was shot by the security guards of the auditor general Dr Nur Farah Jimale.

The 31-year-old Abbas was the youngest minister at the time. His election as MP and appointment of a cabinet minister drew attention as he was from the Dadaab refugee camp where he grew up.

The family has been looking for justice for the murdered minister for a long time, but after six years today justice was done, and they thanked President Hassan Sheikh for that.

Justice finally prevailed! Million thanks to H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud [Somali president] … You did what your predecessor couldn’t do!," tweeted Mohamud, the brother of the slain minster.

For the past six years, this execution has been pending, with Farmajo, the predecessor of Hassan Sheikh accused of refusing to sign the execution of the soldier after a court found him guilty.
