Somalia and Kenya agree to eliminate aviation barriers

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia, and Kenya are working on the implementation of an aviation deal signed in July this year between President Hassan Sheikh and Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi before his term ended in August.

Minister of Transport and Aviation, Fardowsa Osman met with Kenyan Ambassador in Mogadishu, Thomas Chepkoto to discuss the resumption of Kenya Airways flights to Somalia's capital.

It was an honour to receive Hon. Amb. Thomas Chepkuto, Kenyan Ambassador to Somalia today in my office. Our talks focused on strengthening our bilateral aviation partnership, ratifying our respective transport and aviation agreements and resuming KenyaAirways'operations in Somalia," said the Somali aviation minister.

The talks come as the last two months, Somali citizens who wanted to travel to Kenya have faced great obstacles in obtaining entry visas amid improved relations between the two nations.

In July of this year, Hassan Sheikh and Uhuru agreed to lift the travel barriers and make it easy for people with Somali passports to get visas to enter Kenya upon arrival at Nairobi airports

Last week, the ministries of foreign affairs of Somalia and Kenya have recently announced they are in the final stages to implement the aviation deal within two weeks.

For the past years, Somali passport holders are charged over $300 for a single Kenyan visa process while Ethiopia is issued on arrival. Addis Ababa has close ties with Mogadishu.
