Somalia marks Teachers’ Day, pledging to increase education budget

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Long-chaotic Somalia has on Monday marked Teacher's Day in a colourful ceremony held at the National Theatre in Mogadishu amid drought and war on Al-Shabaab.

National Teachers' Day is celebrated every year on November 21 and it is traditionally organized by the Ministry of Education of the Federal Government of Somalia.

The event was attended by the President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Justice and Constitution, MPs, the Mogadishu mayor, teachers, and students.

Speaking to the audience, Farah Sheikh Abdukadir, the Minister of Education highlighted the importance of this great day for the teachers and students, as well as the entire nation.

There is no way out of the problem other than education," said Minister Farah Sheikh Abdukadir.

In his concluding speech, president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated the country's citizens on teacher's day, noting that Somali teachers worked in difficult conditions during the conflict.

Mohamud pledged that his government will increase the budget for the education ministry next year to recruit and train 3,000 teachers who will teach in public schools.
