Somalia PM on his first trip to central town amid army offensive

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamse Abdi Barre today will make his first trip since he was appointed to Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiran region.

An advance team for the Prime Minister's trip, including the chief security and protocol as well as ministers and MPs, arrived in Beledweyne yesterday.

The Defense minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur and the Commander of the Armed Forces Gen Odowa Yusuf Rage were in the region for the past few days on a mission to boost the morale of the troops fighting against Al-Shabaab.

The purpose of the Prime Minister's trip is to assess the security and humanitarian situation in Hiran and inspect the ongoing military operations in the central region.

Beledweyne lies some 350 kilometers north of Mogadishu, the Somali capital.

Somalia is facing a severe drought, the worst in 40 years which is ringing the alarm bell of famine after affecting over 7 million people, mostly farmers, and pastoralists, according to the UN.

The failure of the rainy seasons for four years and climate change are attributed to the current catastrophe in Somalia, which if the aid is not delivered in time could lead to the death of many people.
