Somalia police avert suicide attack in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least one police officer was injured in an explosion at the entrance of Mogadishu's Hamarweyne district police station on Tuesday morning, witnesses said.

A government spokesman said the attack has thwarted the attack after detaining the bomber after throwing off his suicide vest, which exploded between Mogadishu Mall and the police station.

He noted that a tip-off from the public led to the repulse of the attack, adding the security forces have chased the terrorist wrapped explosives around his waist who aimed at killing innocent people.

The police station is located along a busy street in the middle of Hamarweyne market and the blast occurred during morning rush hour, sending a thick plume of white smoke into the sky.

The latest incident comes amid heightening vigilance in the capital by security unit forces who have launched operations after the opposition announced they will hold a mass protest next Friday.

Farmajo whose term expired on February 8 faces internal and external pressure to hold a credible and inclusive election to avoid the country slide into conflict.
