Somalia president appoints his close ally as new spy chief

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Council of Ministers has on Thursday endorsed the appointment of Mahad Salad as the Chief of Somalia's spy agency following a leadership change at Villa Somalia.

The nomination will become a law following the approval and signature of the President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in accordance with the draft constitution.

Mahad Salad is a member of the new 11th Federal Parliament, and he was widely known for his opposition to former president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo who handed over power this week.

He is also considered one of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's closest political allies. Salad will lead the US-funded National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA].

Mahad Salad fills the vacancy left by former intelligence chief Fahad Yasin, who was temporarily replaced by Yasin Farey after the murder of Ikran Tahlil, who also became a member of Parliament.
