Somalia detains press freedom activist over security related charges

MOGADISHU, Somalia -  The Ministry of Information announced that the Secretary General of the Somali Journalists Syndicate - SJS Abdalla Ahmed Mumin was arrested over security-related charges.

The Ministry said it has received information about the arrest of the press union boss at Mogadishu airport by NISA, adding that he is currently in the hands of the Somali Police Force.

The ministry, therefore, confirms that Mumin has no charges related to his work as a journalist. The statement came after the ministry came under pressure and blamed for being behind the arrest.

The press freedom activist was arrested hours after he openly criticized a new government directive banning the independent media from reporting Al-Shabaab propaganda.

Ministry requested the Office of the Prosecutor to urgently provide evidence as to why the citizen is being held, and process his case through the legal procedures in the country as soon as possible.
