Somaliland opposition: Bihi’s term ended, he is not President

Somaliland opposition announced that they do not recognize Bihi as President

HARGEISA, Somalia - Somaliland's opposition parties issued tough decisions on Sunday night, after president Muse Bihi Abdi's term ended, which ended on November 13, 2022.

The candidate of WADDANI Abdirahman Irro along with the chairman of UCID Faisal Ali Warabe held a joint press conference in Hargeisa city to announce their stance on Bihi's presidency.

The opposition parties said they will not recognize Muse Bihi Abdi as the legitimate President of Somaliland, and termed his two-year extension as illegal and contrary to the constitution.

Abdirahman Irro said that they are ready for a dialogue to resolve the election issue which was first expected to take place on November 13 of 2022. Bihi was elected in 2017.

The House of the Elders extended his term of office for two years, a decision that was rejected by the opposition which vowed to stage street protests to call for a timely election in Somaliland.

Additional police were seen on Hargeisa city roads on Monday in fears of a public demonstration against the extension of the president's mandate. Some parts of Somaliland saw violent protests.

Somaliland has been peaceful for a long time compared to other parties of Somalia. The breakaway region has been seeking international recognization for 30 years but that became fruitless.
