AFGOYE, Somalia - A suicide bomber targeted a former district official in Afgoye town within the conflict-hit Lower Shabelle region, south of Somalia on Thursday, police, and witnesses said.

Hussein Jibril Ali, who served as the deputy mayor of Afgoye, about 30 kilometers south of Mogadishu was killed when a suicide bomber driving a motorcycle struck his vehicle on the street.

The explosion that was heard in Afgoye District targeted a car driven by the former Deputy Commissioner of Afgoye District Security, Hussein Jibril, who was said to have been killed in the attack," said a witness.

Afgoye district police officers have reached the place where the explosion happened, and they conducted an investigation but no arrest was reported so far.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast which comes amid intensified Al-Shabaab attacks in Somalia, a country that was beset by a 3-decade bloody conflict.

The new government led by Hassan Sheikh pledged to defeat Al-Shabaab and regain the entire country as AU troops are expected to withdraw from the country by 2024 as planned.
