Supreme Court hears Fahad Yasin’s case over Hop086 seat

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia's high Court has today heard a case filed by former intelligence chief Fahad Yasin against the suspension of the results of the Hop086 seat election in Beledweyne last February.

After hearing the debate between Yasin’s lawyer and the opposing side defending the electoral commission, the chief justice Bashe Yusuf has closed today’s court sitting and said he will make a final verdict shortly.

Fahad, who is now the outgoing president’s national security advisor, filed a lawsuit in court early this month after the election body FEIT nullified his election victory over what it termed irregularities.

The Federal Electoral Implementation Team [FEIT] announced last week that a run-election for the disputed seat will be held amid rejection by HirShabelle state, which described the decision as illegal.

In a statement, HirShabelle state has accused FEIT of politicizing Fahad's seat which it was elected in a free and fair manner without a complaint from the community that belonged to it at the time of the vote.

The controversial former spy chief is facing uncertainty about his future as he is on the brink of failure to join the new parliament which its MPs were sworn in on April 14 in Afisyoni while he was in Mogadishu.

The disputed Hop086 seat was previously occupied by Farah Abdulkadir from his Reer Aw-Hassan Clan who was on an overseas medical trip during the election. He is now back in Mogadishu and wishes to run.

Fahad was on a list of top NISA officials accused of being behind the abduction of a subsequent murder of Ikran Tahlil, a senior cyber-security expert last year. She worked for the spy agency for 4 years.
