Thousands of Students Sit for Unified High School Exams in Somalia

According to the Ministry, 42,000 students, boys, and girls have sat down for the final high school examination that is being conducted in Mogadishu and four other Federal States in the country.

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Federal Ministry of Education has commenced on Saturday a unified national Secondary School Exam in most parts of Somalia despite disputes over the process.

According to the Ministry, 42,000 students, boys, and girls have sat down for the final high school examination that is being conducted in Mogadishu and four other Federal States in the country.

Puntland had boycotted the Federal government’s National Certificate Examination, arguing that the criteria and requirements of the centralized exams fall under their jurisdiction and curriculum.

The Somali Police, are providing security and ensuring the safety of the centers in Mogadishu and other big cities where the throngs of enthusiastic students have convened to determine their future.

In June 2015, Somalia relaunched a nationwide unified high school examination for the first time since the former military regime collapsed in 1991, leading to civil war and three decades of lawlessness.

As the unified exams continue for the 7th year, the Somali gov’t asked to carry out reforms in the curriculum, improving the quality of the examination system and reaching out to new schools across the country.
